Description
The most common painkiller prescribed is hydrocodone. Hydrocodone is a semi-synthetic medication that falls into the opiate or opioid category of drugs. It is similar to morphine, but typically used to treat less severe pain, as it is not quite as strong. Hydrocodone is most often in a formula with acetaminophen and is prescribed by its brand names, such as Vicodin, Lortab, Norco, and several others. Like other opiates and most narcotics, hydrocodone is extremely addictive. There is a physical dependency component as well as a tendency for abuse. Hydrocodone relieves moderate to severe pain, but can also create a feeling of euphoria when taken in larger doses or when there is not pain to counteract the effects. This euphoric effect is sought after by people who likely abuse other substances.
